The end of teaching

After 15 years of working in schools I have reached the very sad moment of having to officially end my teaching career on ill health grounds. Of course I knew this was going to happen, there have been no surprises and my school have been incredibly supportive and understanding over the last few tricky months. I suppose the progressive nature of MND contains very distinct episodes of grief when we say goodbye to the things we used to be able to do…walk, dress and wash ourselves, help around the house, go on bike rides with the kids, and work. I miss the challenge of teaching and the reward of doing something I thought I was quite good at. At least I am able to keep myself busy with ‘the optimist’ campaign.

The support I have received from the schools I have worked in has been amazing and Alice and I have been overwhelmed by the love and kindness both staff and students have shown towards us. The huge sums of money raised for the MND Association by Little Ilford School, Sarah Bonnell School and Matravers School through sponsored walks, non uniform days, 1970′s themed weeks and bucket collections has been a credit to all those involved and we all know how much these donations will help to support people affected by MND and also fund research projects into effective treatments. On a personal level I have taken great strength (and shed many tears) from reading the messages of support on the blogsite, facebook and twitter from students both past and present. Some of the well wishers are now all grown up and settled down with families of their own. To think that they remember me and have taken the time to send a message of support is fantastic.

So, what’s next? Well the latest news is that a group of students are organising a concert to raise money and awareness for the MND Association to be held in December…I can’t wait.
